Police Reform
The recent police killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd have cast a spotlight on police procedure in a number of communities in the United States. There are many levels of policing from local to state to federal and military so decisions about change can be made by a number elected officials including:
Mayor - may appoint Chief of Police in their town or city
Town Council - may appoint Chief of Police in their town or city
Sheriff - elected to oversee law enforcement in a county
District Attorney - elected or appointed, depending on state or county, to decide when to file charges after an arrest
State Legislator - Senator or Assemblyperson make policy that determines what constitutes a crime, what criminal sentences will be and funding for government agencies that deal with offenders and victims of crime
Federal Legislator - Senator or Congressperson able to create federal laws and to reform the criminal justice system
President - Appoints the Attorney General who is responsible for the Department of Justice, which enforces federal law and administers justice
